Long - Term Immersion
An extended version of Omni Med’s Short-Term Immersion, the Long-Term Immersion Program offers the same rich, hands-on experience in global health—just over a longer period of time. Designed for the same audience of students, graduates, and professionals in medicine, nursing, public health, and related fields, this program provides a deeper and more independent opportunity to engage in community health in Uganda.
Program Overview
Participants typically stay for 1–2 months, though longer stays are possible. In the past, we have hosted medical, MPH, and PhD students for 6 months, 9 months and two years. Those interested in year-long placements may also apply to serve as Strategic/Research Coordinators, taking on greater leadership and project management responsibilities within Omni Med’s operations. Previous Strategic/ Research Coordinators have gone on to medical school (3), PhD programs (1), and nursing/ NP school (1 applying).
The Long-Term Immersion Program allows participants to go beyond observation and short-term engagement, taking a more active role in Omni Med’s ongoing public health initiatives. Participants work closely with Omni Med staff, Village Health Teams (VHTs), local health centers, and government health offices—gaining firsthand experience in how community health systems function in Uganda. Most of the 350+ students who have come to stay with us through the years have stayed for 1-2 months, have initiated many new programs (protected water sources, ITN distribution, quarterly trainings), worked on various research initiatives, or simply studied our approach for replication elsewhere (which we encourage.)
